When a patient comes to my clinic with an issue, after I’ve evaluated it the first question I like to ask is: Can we avoid doing anything in this situation?
If the answer is no, the next question I like to ask is: What is the cheapest, quickest and most effective way to deal with the issue?
If there is a range of options then my job is simple. I present my patient with the options and list the pros, cons and costs of each option. I then let the patient make the decision about what they would like to do, including leaving it.
The pros and cons and potential long term costs of leaving the issue are also discussed and considered before a final decision is made.
